Lexington MA is best known for being the location where the first shot of the American Revolutionary War was fired in April 1775.
Lexington MA was originally settled by Europeans around 1642 and was incorporated in 1691 as a parish of Cambridge Massachusetts, specifically called Cambridge Farms. Lexington was subsequently incorporated as its own town in the year 1713. For much of its early history, Lexington MA was primarily a farming community.
Lexington MA took its place in the history books on the morning of April 19, 1775. Militia in Lexington had been warned by Paul Revere and William Dawes that British soldiers were leaving Boston towards roads to Lexington and Concord (where the British planned to seize colonial military supplies they believed were there). The Lexington militia, under the command of Captain John Parker, was deployed in plain view on the Lexington Green (also known as Lexington Common).
Shortly after dawn, the British redcoats arrived while on their march to Concord, MA. It is still unknown who fired the first shot and which side fired first, but a skirmish, and so a war, began in Lexington MA that day. The fighting on the Lexington Green resulted in the deaths of 8 colonists, 10 wounded, and only one British solder wounded. The battle is remembered each year in Lexington MA on Patriot's Day with reenactments and other celebrations.
